À CAPUCHA! FIRST EDITION
2013 / SELF-INITIATED / CAPUCHAS / PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT / PORTUGUESE TRADITION / TEXTILES
The first À Capucha! Collection is a series of five "capuchas" designed based on traditional Portuguese capes made from "burel" (100% wool).
The photo shoot focused on portraying the capuchas in their traditional setting, but worn by modern people.
The shape and colour palette were carefully redesigned to make the capes more functional and adapted to modern use, but remained warm, waterproof and very hard wearing.
We launched two basic models, one for men and one for women, available in six original colours specifically designed for this collection.
/ DOM CAPUCHA /
The men’s model, Dom Capucha, is one style, but available in four colours.
The men’s capucha has an inside pocket in striped 100% cotton fabric, which is traditionally used to line the inside of Portuguese men’s traditional costumes. The pockets make use of scraps of this fabric, which is difficult to find nowadays, and the patterns used vary from piece to piece making them unique.
The ladies' model is available in four variations — "menina", "senhorita", "dona" and "senhora dona capucha" — and each of these is available in five colours.
/ Menina Capucha /
a plain capucha made of burel with a cape that sits on the shoulders or the head.
/ Senhorita Capucha /
The cape and the side arm slits are decorated with small details in burel.
/ Dona Capucha /
The cape and back are decorated with rippling appliquéd burel embroidery.
/ Senhora Dona Capucha /
The cape and right edge are decorated with hand embroidered burel. The right inside edge features hand woven linen, silk and wool.
The ladies' model has two buttons on each shoulder that allow the cape to sit on the shoulders when buttoned up and when unbuttoned allow it to hang from the head like a mantle, like the traditional capuchas.
