The Breakdown of the Promenade:
Plot and Temporality in James Stirling’s Architecture 1959-1979
2018 / BOOK / EDITORIAL / architecture
This book compiles a doctoral research project in History and Theory of architecture. The author's intention was that the book would have no images that could distract the reader from the textual narrative, although throughout the text there are several references to technical drawings, photos, videos, books and musical pieces.
The solution found was to design a book that could be held in the hands and comfortably read as if it were a good novel — fluid, harmonious and without distractions.
In order to make a second level of reading possible, which would include images, videos and sounds, but that does not interrupt the textual narrative, QR-Codes were included, which correspond to a number identified in the book, and refer to a website where all the elements mentioned throughout the book are available for viewing.
The austerity of the object is accentuated by the texture of the cover and by printing in a single colour. In the end, the book and website create a multimedia dialectic which reflects the depth of research carried out.
